Joint Commission accreditation can open doors for a behavioral health program, and the process rewards the organizations that prepare early. Continued Compliance works with treatment providers to get ready for the Behavioral Health Care and Human Services accreditation program, one step at a time.
If you run a drug and alcohol treatment program, whether residential, inpatient, outpatient or IOP, you can pursue Joint Commission accreditation. The same goes for mental health facilities, inpatient or outpatient. The Joint Commission's behavioral health program covers addiction and substance use treatment and mental health services, along with residential and other community-based programs.
To apply, the Joint Commission requires that your organization is located in the United States or its territories, assesses and improves the quality of its services, identifies the services it provides, and provides services its standards address. We confirm where you stand on each point before you commit to an application.
Readiness review
We go through the standards that apply to your services and hand you a plain list: what you already have in place, what is missing, and what to fix first. The list is ranked so your team knows where to start and your leadership sees the full scope.
We write your policies
Where your policies fall short, we draft the revised versions ourselves, written to line up with the Joint Commission's Elements of Performance, the specific expectations listed under each standard. You review and approve every policy before it goes into use.
We make the changes
Gaps in forms, workflows and documentation get fixed by our team with your sign-off, so your staff keep their attention on clients. We update the forms and workflows your staff actually use each day and walk them through the changes so the new process sticks.
We audit your charts
You get a monthly random chart audit for your review, so you can identify gaps immediately and know which staff members are not providing the documentation insurers use to pay your claims. That helps you head off clawbacks and avoid being pulled into an audit.
We run the walkthroughs
We trace a client's experience through your program, walk your facility, and prepare your staff for survey interviews before the real visit. Staff practice answering questions about their own role, and we point out what a surveyor is likely to notice in the building and in the records.
Mock surveys
We simulate the survey so your team has been through it once before it counts. A consultant plays the surveyor role, reviews charts and policies, and interviews staff. You then get a written summary of what we found and a corrective action list you can act on.
Application planning
The Joint Commission has you settle on a realistic "ready month" within the next 12 months. We build the timeline backward from that date and keep you on it. We also line up your leadership team and your documents early so nothing gets scrambled at the last minute.
Survey support
We are with you every step of the survey, on site or virtually depending on the notice you get, so you are never handling it alone. We help you answer surveyor questions and find documents quickly, and we keep notes on every finding so you can respond right away.
After the survey
If the Joint Commission asks you to resolve issues, which its process page says is usually within 60 days, we write the fixes with you and track them to completion. We also review the final report with your team so every finding has an owner and a due date.
Staying ready
We keep working with you in the years between surveys, including the Focused Standards Assessment the Joint Commission uses for that period, with ongoing chart audits and training. Already working with us on CARF or licensing? See all of our services or take the compliance self-assessment.
